JAFFA Case Study | How Does Acrylic Achieve a Surrealist Bar? Full Analysis from Design Concept to Perfect Realization

JAFFA Case Study | How Does Acrylic Achieve a Surrealist Bar? Full Analysis from Design Concept to Perfect Realization

2026-05-26

As a 15-year industry pioneer specializing in high-end commercial space acrylic customization, we have been deeply involved in the material realization of numerous internationally renowned design projects. Today, we take this bar as an example to comprehensively analyze how acrylic achieves the entire process from design concept to perfect presentation in high-end dining spaces.

I. Project Background & Design Challenges

The design philosophy of this project was to create an immersive environment that completely transports guests away from reality. The designer aimed to craft a dining experience that is both mysterious and modern, using strong color contrasts, dramatic light and shadow effects, and organic forms.

However, this bold design concept posed significant challenges in material selection and fabrication:

  • How to achieve a large-area, uniformly luminous effect while ensuring structural safety?
  • How to keep the red countertop vibrant and smooth under high-frequency use?
  • How to transform cold industrial materials into warm, textural spatial elements?
  • How to ensure dimensional accuracy and installation consistency for all custom components?

Q: Why did the designer ultimately choose acrylic over glass or metal as the primary decorative material?

A: This was a critical decision. While glass offers good light transmission, it is heavy, brittle, and difficult to shape into complex curves. Metal, though sturdy, cannot transmit light and offers limited color expression. Acrylic perfectly solves these problems:

  • Light transmittance up to 92%, superior to ordinary glass, with uniform light diffusion
  • Half the weight of glass, significantly reducing structural load
  • Excellent thermoforming properties, allowing complex organic shapes
  • Rich color options, customizable in any color or transparency
  • Impact resistance 16 times that of glass, ideal for high-traffic commercial spaces
  • Easy to fabricate and maintain; localized damage can be repaired

II. Core Acrylic Application Solutions
1. Illuminated Acrylic Bar Columns – The Soul of the Space

The bar is the visual center of the restaurant, and the six illuminated columns supporting it are the soul of this center. The designer wanted these columns to radiate a warm golden glow like molten lava, while retaining a refined surface texture.

Our solution adopted a dual-layer acrylic structure:

  • Inner layer: 5mm thick milk-white acrylic light guide plate, using laser dotting technology for uniform light emission
  • Outer layer: 3mm thick gold metal mesh interlayer acrylic, creating a delicate textured effect
  • Light source: High CRI (>90) LED strips, 3000K color temperature, simulating warm candlelight

Q: How do you ensure such tall columns have uniform illumination without dark spots or patches?

A: This is one of the most challenging technical difficulties in illuminated acrylic fabrication. We employed three core technologies:

  • Gradient-density dot pattern technology: Depending on the distance from the light source, we engrave different densities of dots on the back of the light guide plate – sparser near the light source, denser farther away – achieving even light distribution.
  • Side lighting + bottom fill lighting: In addition to LED strips at the top of the columns, we added a fill light strip at the bottom, effectively solving insufficient brightness in the lower section.
  • Diffuse coating technology: A special diffuse coating applied to the surface of the light guide plate further scatters light and eliminates hot spots.

The final result is columns with perfectly uniform brightness from any angle, no dark areas, flawlessly achieving the designer's desired "molten lava glow."

2. Red Acrylic Bar Countertop – Balancing Visual Focus & Practicality

The 8-meter-long curved red bar countertop is one of the most striking elements of the space. The designer demanded a seamless, monolithic surface with saturated color, capable of withstanding all the challenges of a dining environment: spills, hot餐具, frequent wiping, etc.

We used imported cast acrylic sheet, realized through the following processes:

  • Seamless splicing technology: A专用 adhesive with the same composition as the sheet was used to join multiple pieces into a single unit, followed by repeated sanding and polishing to achieve a completely invisible seam.
  • Food-grade surface treatment: The countertop surface received special antibacterial and stain-resistant treatment, meeting US FDA food contact standards, effectively resisting common stains like red wine and coffee.
  • Scratch & abrasion-resistant coating: A UV-cured coating with 4H hardness significantly improves durability.
  • Rounded edges: All edges were rounded to R10mm, enhancing both aesthetics and safety.

Q: Will the red acrylic countertop fade over time?

A: Ordinary colored acrylic can indeed fade, especially under UV exposure. However, for this project we used imported cast colored acrylic, where the color is added directly to the raw material during sheet production, not surface-sprayed. This provides excellent weather resistance and color fastness. According to our accelerated aging tests, color change ΔE<2 after 10 years of indoor use – virtually imperceptible to the naked eye.

3. Illuminated Acrylic Staircase Handrails – A Flowing Neon Waterfall

The staircase connecting the first and second floors is another highlight. The designer wanted the handrails to flow like a cascading turquoise neon waterfall, guiding guests upward.

Our solution:

  • 10mm thick clear acrylic panels, precision-cut to uniform dimensions by CNC
  • LED strips embedded into the edge of each acrylic panel for edge-lighting
  • All panels diamond-polished to crystal-clear edges, allowing light to emit perfectly from the edge
  • Hidden mounting structure: all wires and connectors concealed within the metal handrail and stair structure – no exposed screws

Q: With so many acrylic panels, how do you ensure identical brightness and color?

A: This requires strict quality control from the source:

  • All acrylic panels from the same batch of imported sheet, ensuring consistent material and transmittance.
  • All LED strips undergo rigorous binning for color and brightness – color temperature tolerance ±50K, brightness tolerance ±5%.
  • Each panel individually lit and tested before installation.
  • Uniform power supply and control system ensures identical voltage and current to all strips.

The final result is a staircase handrail that resembles a flowing turquoise neon waterfall, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding dark environment and a powerful visual impact.

III. Craftsmanship Details & Technical Breakthroughs

In this project, we not only realized the designer's vision but also achieved several technical breakthroughs:

  • Large-Scale Curved Acrylic Thermoforming Technology
  • Metal Mesh Interlayer Acrylic Process
  • Hidden Mounting System
IV. Final Results & Client Feedback

Since opening in 2025, the restaurant has quickly become one of the hottest dining destinations, receiving nominations for numerous international design awards. The design team highly praised our acrylic customization work:

"Acrylic was the most important material in this project, allowing our surrealist design concept to come to life. Yafa Plastics' team not only understood our design intent but also provided many professional suggestions on fabrication. The final result far exceeded our expectations."

The restaurant operator also expressed satisfaction with acrylic's practicality:

"After more than three months of operation, the countertop and illuminated columns have remained in perfect condition – no damage or fading. Acrylic is very easy to clean, significantly reducing our maintenance burden."

V. The Value of Acrylic in High-End Dining Spaces

This case clearly demonstrates the unique value of acrylic in high-end dining spaces:

  • Visual expressiveness: Acrylic's excellent optical properties enable unique lighting effects and color expression – ideal for immersive spaces.
  • Design freedom: Acrylic can be fabricated into virtually any shape or form, offering unlimited creative possibilities for designers.
  • Practicality: Durable, easy to clean, low maintenance – perfect for high-frequency commercial use.
  • Safety: High impact resistance; if broken, does not shatter into sharp fragments – safer than glass.
  • Sustainability: 100% recyclable, meeting modern commercial space environmental requirements.
